HSCI 390 + L
Classes and programs:
The Health Sciences 390 (BIOSTATISTICS) and 390L (BIOSTATISTICS LAB) are core classes for more than one degree program. Your degree program will determinewhich section of HSCI 390/Lyou should enroll in. For example, there aresectionsreservedonlyfor public health students andsectionsreserved foronlyhealth administration students. This is because the lab curriculum differs for the two programs. If you are a student who is not in public health or health administration, you may need to contactyour program director for apermission number.
Linked Sections:
Each Health Sciences 390 lecture islinkedto a specific 390L Lab. These arelinked classes, meaning that if you take the section “1” lecture you need to take thelinkedsection “1” lab. Students are not allowed to mix and match lecture and lab sections.
The only exception to thisis ifa studenthaspassed one class but needsto retake the other. If this is the case, please contact your advisor, the department, or the instructor directly.
Enrollment
Classsectionsare open for enrollment untilfilled, unless otherwise specified. The onlinesectionsfill quickly. The department does notopen additional onlinesectionsuntil all other sectionshave been filled. If the onlinesectionsare full, but the in-personsectionsare open, students should enroll in the in-personsections or risk waiting until next semester to register. It is not recommended for students to “wait and see” if a“closed”onlinesectionwill eventually have anopen seat. This could result in a student not having a spot in any 390section and a possible delay in graduation.
Only instructors of the classes have full access to permission numbers so please contact the instructors about class adds. We recommend the following:
- Enroll in an open class.
- If all classes are full contact the instructors of the Lecture and the Linked Lab via email. – (this does not guarantee a spot)
- Sign up on the waitlist. – (this does not guarantee a spot)
- Just before the start of the semester the waitlist will be sent to all instructors, and they can cross check when you signed up and if you are a graduating senior and fill any open spots from the waitlist and based on who contacted them.
Waitlists
Due tothelinkednature ofHSCI 390 + 390L, the SOLAR waitlist system does notallow a waitlist. Instead, we have an internalsurvey linkas a waitlist forHSCI 390/L.Please onlysign up to be on the waitlistonceyourenrollment date has opened.Fill out the surveyONEtime per semester.
The waitlistsurveyopens at the start ofeachFalland Spring semesterenrollmentperiod.
(if the survey does not work, this is because the survey closes on Aug 1st for Fall & Jan 1st for Spring.)
When active, the waitlistsurveyis checked at least once a month, and emails sent to the email address provided in the survey. After the waitlistsurveycloses, any open seatsare filled based on the following priority:
- Students inthe programthe class isreservedfor
- Graduatingseniors with a graddateof that semester
- Those who only have HSCI 390/L asone of the lastmajorclasses
After the waitlistsurveycloses, studentsneed to contact theHSCI 390/Linstructors directly about classes. However, if seats become available in a closedsection, instructorsadmitstudentsoff the waitlist. Once the semester starts, the waitlistsurveyis deleted and there are no more enrollmentsoff the waitlist.

FAQ
It is not recommended for you to sign up for the waitlist if there are still in-personsectionseats available. Onlinesectionstypically fill quickly and seats rarely open prior to the start of the semester. If you have time, you can wait for another semester and try to enroll in an onlinesection, or youcantake one of the open seats available in an in-personsection.
The department is limited in the number of onlinesectionsoffered. Once the class registration opens, there usually are no moresectionsadded and students should enroll in available seats in othersections.
We do prioritize graduating seniors and try to accommodate as best as we can. Contact your program director or advisor and explain the situation. You will need to have your DPR ready and proof that you aregraduating this semester.
No. The waitlists are cleared out at the beginning of each semester and every semester is considered its own enrolment period with a waitlist.
